Leicester City could make January transfer U-Turn on £23m star: View

During the January transfer window, Patson Daka’s career at Leicester City appeared to be in danger of ending, but in his past three Championship games, the striker has either scored or assisted on three goals, possibly saving his career at the club.

The forward hasn’t played much under Enzo Maresca thus far after failing to make the switch from the King Power Stadium in the summer, but he has started the last three games in Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho’s absence.

After his team was demoted to the Championship, the former RB Salzburg attacker, who was a highly regarded player when he joined the team, would have wanted to get some playing time in the Midlands.

It’s quite the change from his cameo appearances in matches against Sunderland and Liverpool in the EFL Cup, where he was mostly benched or left out of matchday squads.

However, Daka had to start and Tom Cannon had to come in to fill in for Iheanacho and Vardy, who were out due to illness and injuries.

Since Bournemouth was unable to complete a deal at the end of the summer transfer window, Daka has been strongly linked to a move away from the King Power Stadium for months. It appeared like Brentford was planning to replace Ivan Toney with the Zambian international in other places.

There was an agreement between Leicester and AC Milan to send the center-forward to the San Siro on deadline day, but for whatever reason the intended move fell through, according to Sky Sports in Italy via Milan News.

Given Daka’s standing in Leicester’s hierarchy, interest from teams like Everton and Monaco is probably going to persist in January. Having seen his playing time at Leicester nearly disappear, many may have believed Daka’s career at the club was finished.

For a rumored £23 million, the 25-year-old left RB Salzburg to join Leicester in 2021. At the time, he was seen as an extremely exciting addition. Before this season, the striker has only 15 goals and 8 assists in 74 games with the Foxes.

However, the Zambian international was one of the most gifted forwards in the competition before moving to Leicester. He scored 61 goals in 87 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga. Under Maresca, he always had the potential to blow up this season, and we are starting to see it happen.

Vardy and Iheanacho have a few things going against them, which may strengthen Iheanacho’s long-term case for a starting position. Vardy is certainly not getting any younger and isn’t one for the future anymore, whilst Iheanacho’s contract runs out in 2024.

Club Appearances Goals Assists
Leicester City 79 17 9
RB Salzburg 125 68 27
FC Liefering 27 6 7

Despite the possibility that many at the club were prepared to cut their losses next month, his comeback probably justifies keeping him around for a little while longer. The goal against Millwall, the assist against Plymouth Argyle, and his overall level of play have given Maresca and the Leicester administration something to consider.

For what promises to be a difficult second half of the season, the team should be willing to hold onto him. Maresca will unavoidably have to make use of his deep squad in the last stretch. Daka is undoubtedly a factor in his team’s outstanding array of attacking possibilities, which is among the best in the league.
