Club react to Sunderland AFC transfer bid as Birmingham City circle also

The Black Cats are interested in the 21-year-old ahead of the January transfer window, according to Diario de Sevilla.

This season, the international player from Gambia has made an impressive impact for the club’s B-team, with two assists and five goals.

Sevilla does not have to sell Drammeh this winter because they have the option to activate a 12-month extension on his current contract. Drammeh’s current contract expires in the summer of 2024.

After appointing Michael Beale as manager earlier this week, Sunderland will now focus on strengthening their first team roster when the January transfer window opens the following month.

Sunderland’s interest in Drammeh

TeamTalk earlier this month said that Birmingham City was also keeping an eye on the 21-year-old and that Sunderland was interested in signing him in the new year.

Sevilla has since rejected the Wearside team’s original offer for the player.

With him having the ability to challenge for a spot in the first team, the Spanish team hopes to hold onto the dynamic young forward.

The Gambian prefers to compete on the right side of the field, but he can play up front as a striker.

With goals becoming a serious worry in recent weeks, Sunderland may need bolstering their attack in January to increase their chances of being promoted.

With his first game in charge this weekend, Beale will need to find a way to close the distance to the play-off spots.

Out of the top seven teams in the division, the Black Cats have scored the fewest goals, and third-fewest of the top 12.

Their worries about scoring goals may be allayed by the signing of Drammeh, although it’s unclear what kind of fee Sevilla will take.

Sunderland is now three points outside of the play-off spots in the Championship table, sitting in seventh position.

As the season nears its halfway point, Leeds United, in third place, is now nine points behind.

Tony Mowbray, 60, was fired at the beginning of the month due to a dismal run of play. Beale took over as manager on Monday.

After losing to Luton Town in the play-off semi-final, Mowbray guided the squad to a sixth-place finish the previous season, almost missing out on promotion.

Sunderland’s next game is scheduled for December 23 at the Stadium of Light against Coventry City.

A sign of things to come from Sunderland

This is an early sign that Sunderland will be a busy team during the January transfer window.

Drammeh is the kind of signing that the Black Cats have been known to make in the past few years.

He is an intriguing addition to Beale’s team for the second half of the campaign and an exciting prospect.

Although it’s evident that some offensive strengthening is needed in January, Sevilla’s position here indicates that achieving their main goals won’t be simple.
