‘I’m surprised…’ – Sutton hits back in Souness argument after Rangers controversy

Chris Sutton has looked to continue his recent spat with Graeme Souness by confessing his surprise that the Rangers legend couldn’t see through Fabio Silva’s diving.

This comes after Souness labelled Sutton “biased” for his rant live on Sky Sports which was then followed by a column reacting to that criticism in the Daily Record [8 April].

Now, the former Celtic man has taken to X [9 April] to continue the disagreement as he reiterated his point that there was no need for VAR to award the penalty and that Silva dived.

Sutton wrote: “I’m surprised someone who knows the game so well can’t see through a diver… We should be calling it out. Beaton was in a great position and initially books Silva. Walsh re-referees it and thinks it’s clear and obvious… Did Walsh see the touch on the ball from Johnston? …mmm”

Chris Sutton continues

The Celtic hero has been criticised several times for his evident bias against Rangers, but his words in the 3-3 draw at Ibrox were almost at another level and have led to widespread condemnation even now from the likes of Souness.

Ultimately, the penalty was awarded and Tavernier tucked it away which put the first step in place for Philippe Clement’s side to complete a fantastic comeback and Celtic threw away a golden opportunity to take all three points.

Sutton has a history of not letting go of petty debates when it comes to Rangers. The Celtic hero’s spat with Todd Cantwell is another he can’t seem to drop, and couldn’t resist having another dig after the Old Firm clash.

With the debate surrounding the penalty decision likely to continue for some time given the loud viewpoints of both sides of the divide – expressed by Souness and Sutton – it doesn’t appear the latter will let it die soon.
