Leeds United star transfer stand-off: View

Leeds United club captain Liam Cooper is expected to depart Elland Road this summer despite being offered a new deal

Liam Cooper’s negotiations with Blackburn Rovers are continuing as the Leeds United club captain edges closer to a departure from Elland Road. Despite being offered a new one-year deal by Leeds, Cooper is expected to depart the Whites this summer in an effort to play more minutes after falling significantly down the pecking order under manager Daniel Farke.

The 32-year-old was only a small bit-part player last season as Leeds pushed for a return to the Premier League and knows that will be the case once again this coming campaign if he extends his stay at Leeds into an 11th year. Cooper has not turned down Leeds’ offer and could end up staying at a club he arrived at in 2004 from Chesterfield, but the quest to play more in the twilight years of his career is a driving force.

The current length of contract being offered to Cooper by Blackburn is a sticking point that has so far stopped the deal from getting over the line. Blackburn only want to offer Cooper a one-year deal says Nixon, with Cooper pushing for a two year contract if he is to switch to Rovers. Blackburn could offer Cooper a one-year deal with a clause of a second year based on appearances, but after a number of injury troubles Cooper may seek a stronger commitment to get the deal over the line.
