Leeds United receives a huge boost in the transfer of Joe Rodon

Leeds United have received an important boost in their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur’s Joe Rodon this summer.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the defender is reluctant to start fresh with a new club next season amid speculation over his future.

Rodon spent last year on loan at Elland Road, where he established himself as a key part of Daniel Farke’s first team squad.

The centre-back featured 43 times in the Championship as the Whites narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League (all stats from Fbref).

Rodon has just 12 months remaining on his Spurs contract, with the London club having exercised a one-year extension option earlier this week.

Joe Rodon transfer latest

Leeds’ failure to gain promotion to the Premier League has proven a stumbling block in their pursuit of Rodon.

Play-off winners Southampton have been linked with a move for the Wales international following their 1-0 win over Farke’s team at Wembley Stadium.

But the cost of staying in the Championship means that negotiations between Leeds and Tottenham will not be straightforward.

However, it is understood that Rodon is not looking to avoid having to start fresh with another new team for the upcoming term, which enhances their chances of completing a deal.

It’s believed that the 26-year-old is surplus to requirements at Spurs, with Ange Postecoglou not planning to use him in his first team squad going forward.

With just 12 months remaining on his contract, the London club will be keen to offload him this summer in order to avoid losing him for nothing next year.

But it has been reported that Leeds will need to raise funds during the transfer market in order to maintain compliance with financial rules, meaning it is likely they will have to sell before they buy.

This has complicated the situation surrounding Rodon’s future even further, and means a conclusion on this saga may have to wait.

Leeds players attracting summer interest

The likes of Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Wilfried Gnonto are among the first team stars gaining transfer attention at Leeds.

Summerville won the EFL’s player of the year award, and contributed 19 goals and nine assists in the Championship, leading to speculation over his future.

Chelsea and Liverpool have both been linked with a move for the Dutchman this summer.

Meanwhile, Gray is also attracting interest from a number of clubs, with Gnonto reportedly eyeing an exit after Leeds’ play-off final loss.

Rodon deal could take some time to complete

Even if Leeds have a free run at signing Rodon, they will still have to wait until they sort out player sales first.

This could take a number of weeks, and leaves the door open for a club like Southampton to swoop in.

This is the consequence of failing to gain promotion, as a deal could already be organised if they had won last month’s play-off final.

If he were to go to St. Mary’s, it would be a real double whammy, as it was Russell Martin’s side that prevailed at Wembley to clinch a top flight return at Leeds’ expense
