Wolves issue official statement after two Premier League players arrested over rape allegation

According to the Sun, two players, both aged 19, were released on bail after being interviewed by the police over the alleged incident.

The pair play for the same club, which declined to comment to the original reporting on the allegations.

“Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape,” a police spokesperson said.

“A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape.

“Both men have since been released on police bail.”

Amid much online speculation, Wolves have released a statement in which they deny their players are among those involved in the alleged rape probe.

The statement read: “A newspaper article published yesterday has triggered inappropriate online speculation over the identities of two individuals reportedly under police investigation.

“Whilst we would not typically comment on ongoing police matters, in order to protect the welfare of our young players, we feel it is necessary to confirm that the allegations to not relate to anyone at Wolves.”

The Sun has now alleged that the two players at the centre of the incident have been suspended by their club.

The same publication claimed the alleged rape is said to have taken place on Friday night, with the alleged victim said to have contacted the police hours later and filed a formal complaint.

The Premier League introduced mandatory sexual consent training for players and staff back in 2022.

This followed on from a series of high-profile incidents involving top flight footballers.

The sessions were introduced to address healthy, respectful relationships and included understanding harassment and consent.

The unnamed player, who was due to play for his country at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, was arrested at an address in Barnet.

He was later further arrested on suspicion of two incidents of rape that were alleged to have been committed in April and June of last year against a different woman.

The Guardian claim that the player’s Premier League club knew about an allegation of rape against the footballer last season but allowed him to continue playing for the first team.

The unnamed Premier League club declined to comment when contacted by The Guardian.

Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a man was arrested in Barnet on Monday and taken into custody before being released on bail on Tuesday.

A statement from Scotland Yard read: “On 4 July, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police. It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022.

The woman, who is also in her 20s, is said to have shown police photos of “bruising” after reporting the alleged attack, which she claims took place during a holiday with the player last month. The alleged victim fled the five-star resort she was staying at with the footballer and flew home.

She spoke to police on her return to the UK and made a full statement at a police station on Sunday, showing detectives photos that she claimed showed bruising on her body after the alleged attack.

The player is now set to miss his club’s pre-season tour while the investigations continue, with the Premier League season due to get underway on August 5.
