Key statistic indicates Wolves star is the second-best player in his position in the Premier League

As the end of the Premier League season nears, one key statistic suggests that one Wolves man has been the second-best in his position this season.

Gary O’Neil has improved every man at Wolves since his arrival at the start of the campaign. For a team that were expected to be fighting relegation, Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the edges of Europe and are preparing for an FA Cup quarter-final on the weekend.

Compared to last season, multiple players have stepped up at Molineux. Wolves’ goalscoring issue has vanished with Hwang Hee-Chan and Matheus Cunha becoming stars of the club.

Despite being on the brink of a summer departure, Rayan Ait-Nouri has become one of the league’s best-attacking fullbacks. The Algerian was the star of the show in the 2-1 victory over Fulham.

However, arguably the most underrated player for Wolves this season has been their man between the sticks, Jose Sa.

Wolves’ Jose Sa is performing better than Alisson and Enderson

The Wolves goalkeeper has been subject to a lot of criticism from fans this season. Sa was poor against Newcastle in the 3-0 defeat which caused many to question his abilities in the net.

However, this criticism seems to be unfounded. The goalkeeper was excellent against Fulham and was key to getting the victory. This saw him praised by Alan Shearer after he kept the club in the European contention.

Now, after the game, it seems as if the ‘keeper deserves more respect than he is getting.

According to TheOther14, Sa has prevented 5.7 goals this season. This is easily one of the best in the Premier League. Only Spurs’ Guglielmo Vicario has done better with 6.1 goals prevented.

This puts him well above some of the most respected ‘keepers in the division such as Man City’s Ederson who has -0.2 and Liverpool’s Alisson at 0.9.

The Wolves ‘keeper isn’t as loved as some players in the first-team squad. This is despite Sa winning the club multiple games this season with some sensational stops.

Wolves’ first Premier League win of the season was mainly down to the ‘keeper. Sa produced some sensational stops in the 1-0 victory over Everton to really get the O’Neil era underway.

Sa has also been a key factor in Wolves’ FA Cup run, keeping clean sheets against both West Brom and Brighton on their way to the quarter-finals.

Calls to bring in a new ‘keeper in the summer clearly need to come to an end. Sa certainly prevents more goals than he lets in and that statistic proves it.
