Committee Members News: Read Chairman Jim’s Latest Blog On CCFC’s F.A.Cup Q-F Record!

This Association’s committee Chairman and founding member Jim Brown has produced a long-standing, roughly weekly, blog post about all things Sky Blue for many years. Parts of it have also appeared in a regular column for the Coventry Telegraph.

The posts are a mine of information about the club’s recent and long distant past. As most Sky Blue fans know Jim is also Coventry City FC’s official club historian. The latest blog of this Championship season 2023-24 has recently been published online so why not take a look?

The current blog is a fairly brief one compared to most postings and looks at the CCFC history books to place in context the Sky Blues relatively rare achievement of reaching the Quarter Final stage (Jim prefers ‘Round Six’) in the venerable F.A.Cup competition. The blog was written just before the Sky Blues magnificent 3-2 QF victory over Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers so fans will be pleased to update the stats with that famous win!

Jim gives chapter and verse on each of the previous only seven times (in 130 years) that CCFC had reached the same stage- of which they had won only one, the time the ‘Boys of ’87’ went all the way to Wembley to win the Cup itself. Jim gives full details of the campaigns of 1909-10 when City reached the last eight as a Southern League Club) and 1962-63 when Jimmy’s Hill‘s Third Division side eventually went out at Highfield Road to next month’s semi-final opponents at Wembley Manchester United.

Then Jim goes onto look at 1972-73 when our Division One side went out at Molineux (so the current Sky Blues got full revenge on the Wolves)! Another West Midlands side West Brom did for us 1981-82 so the win at Hillsborough in 1986-87 against Sheffield Wednesday was not only very welcome but put us on course for our only F.A.Cup Final Wembley win -truly a day to remember for all those that were lucky enough to witness it!

In 1997-98 it took a penalty shoot out at Bramall Lane to see the Sky Blues removed from the Cup Q-Fs by Sheffield United in a replay whilst last time prior to this season our mid-table Championship team were easily removed by Premier League Chelsea at the CBS Arena in 2008-09. Jim provides all the details of these seven ties.

As usual there’s much food for thought and plenty for Sky Blue fans to get their teeth into in Jim’s latest offering as Sky Blue fans ‘keep the faith’ for the current campaign. It and all previous instalments of the blog can be read by clicking on the link below:-
