Arguably’:Football finance expert tells Jim White why Nottingham Forest have been punished more harshly than Everton: View

The news comes after Everton were slapped with a ten-point deduction towards the end of 2023, a charge which was then reduced by four last month.

The second charge is next on the agenda. The hope is that the authority’s next punishment will be less severe.

Of course, looking at Forest’s punishment, it’s hard not to feel a little aggrieved.

Although the City Ground club’s losses were more significant than the Toffees’, certain mitigating factors may have contributed.

However, talking live on talkSPORT on Tuesday afternoon, football finance expert Stefan Borson suggested Forest’s punishment is, in fact, harsher.

Who has been punished more severely – Everton or Nottingham Forest?

Borson told Jim White that he believes Forest’s initial punishment is more significant.

“It was higher in absolute terms but the limit that they had was significantly lower. When you break it down, arguably, Nottingham Forest have had a higher sanction than Everton on appeal,” he said (10:57).

“When you break down what the appeal was, it was six points and at least one of these points must have been in relation to the misrepresentation to the Premier League.

“Their own barristers called their information to the Premier League objectively misleading.”

Borson has suggested that Forest were actually sanctioned an extra point compared to Everton.

“So at least one point was for that. Therefore, the other five must have been for the breach,” he said.

“When you look at the Forest sanction and their early admission, it was reduced by two points. So on a like-for-like basis, six plays five—six for Nottingham Forest and five for Everton. It’s just that Everton have this aggregating factor around misleading information.”

Chaos at the bottom of the Premier League table

Chaos is the best word to describe what is happening at the bottom of the Premier League.

And we are yet to hear the end of the story, with Everton set to be punished once more. The precedent is now firmly in place ahead of the third verdict, which should indicate a lesser charge potentially heading their way.

For Evertonians, potentially one or two points docked would be acceptable. The Premier League must ensure this process doesn’t run beyond the end of the current season.
