‘Makes no sense’… Michail Antonio baffled by what Nottingham Forest have done this season

Michail Antonio doesn’t see the concept of appointing referee analysts catching on after Nottingham Forest appointed Mark Clattenburg.

The West Ham striker has been speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast.

So, what has Antonio said about Forest appointing Clattenburg? Let’s take a closer look…

What Michail Antonio thinks to Forest appointing Mark Clattenburg
Well, it would appear that the Hammers striker simply doesn’t understand the concept at all.

Clattenburg came out and spoke after Forest lost 1-0 to Liverpool at the weekend – with Paul Tierney making a bad mistake in injury time.

The Reds were left stunned when Darwin Nunez scored in the ninth minute of stoppage time to leave Forest to nurse another defeat.

Former Forest striker Antonio was quizzed on whether he thinks the concept of clubs appointing referee analysts will catch on – and it’s fair to say he doesn’t.

He told the Footballer’s Football Podcast: “No, they’re not going to become commonplace. Clattenburg being there doesn’t mean that the referee isn’t going to have howlers.

“They have a video system now to stop them having howlers and they still have howlers! Having a referee to explain to you that a referee has had one makes no sense.”

Clattenburg appointment now provides top of discussion
This might be uncommon here in the Premier League but in Europe many top clubs have referee analysts working with players.

Evangelos Marinakis wants to leave no stone unturned in his quest to get Forest better results on the pitch.

If there is anything that Clattenburg can pass onto Nuno Espirito Santo and then in turn to his players, that can only be a good thing.

Since his appointment, Forest have been denied a clear penalty against West Ham and then saw Paul Tierney mess up with an application of the law at the weekend.

It’s hardly something out of the ordinary that Forest have done, however, and perhaps Antonio would be wise to look at what is happening around Europe.

With the West Ham player still operating in the Premier League, it might not be long before his club are appointing someone into a similar role.

The decision made by Forest will certainly give lots of clubs food for thought and in our view, this might be something that does catch on.
