The former midfield player for Chelsea and Tottenham signed with Sunderland in October 2013 and remained there for eighteen months till his dismissal in March 2015. Poyet, who is currently manager of the Greek national team, said he still keeps in touch with Sunderland stakeholder Juan Sartori and had pleasant memories of his time with the Black Cats. Although the 56-year-old’s tenure at Wearside was turbulent, he is most known for his three Tyne-Wear derby victories against bitter rivals Newcastle United.

And he disclosed that the two main goals that Paolo di Canio had set for him when he took over were defeating Newcastle and remaining in the Premier League.

“I was asked to do two things when I went there: beat Newcastle United and keep the club in the Premier League, which I managed to do,” he said to NewBettingSites.uk. “We managed just one point in the first seven games. Then we went down 4-0 to Swansea. One point from eight games. Next up was Newcastle at home, which we defeated 2-1. That was it; everything was transformed. It was amazing. That year, I defeated Newcastle on all three of our games against them.

“I think any Sunderland supporter would be cool with that; we were winning against Newcastle every time we played them in the Premier League.” It was a fantastic atmosphere.

“Although I am obviously unable to return at this time, I have a wonderful relationship with the club and Juan Sartori, one of the owners. We communicate once a month. I would want to return someday, if the timings allow.
