As Coventry City returns to the play-off mix, Wright man for the job, unheralded Simms, and Fortress CBS will be highlighted.

Haji Wright’s two goals in three minutes against Millwall forced Coventry City to come back and win, moving the Sky Blues into the top six of the Championship ahead of two difficult road trips to Plymouth and Stoke.

Haji Wright of Coventry City scores his team's first goal from the penalty spot

In the televised match at the CBS Arena, where Mark Robins’ team appeared to be in danger of losing to teenager Romain Esse’s goal in the first half, the Sky Blues were guilty of squandering early opportunities.

However, Lions defender Japhet Tanganga took Wright down in the penalty area, earning Wright a spot kick in the 67th minute. Additionally, the USA international scored the game’s winning goal in the 70th minute after defying Matija Sarkic with a penalty kick. Some of the main talking points from the 2-1 triumph are listed here…

Wright man for the job

There was a serious undercurrent to Mark Robins’ joking about wanting to kill Haji Wright and Callum O’Hare for playing a fast game of rock, paper, scissors to determine who would take City’s crucial equalizing penalty.

When Wright was sidelined with an injury during the third round of the FA Cup, O’Hare scored the last penalty for the Sky Blues against Oxford United. As a result, he believed he was entitled to take the next one against Millwall when it came up in the 67th minute. However, Wright felt he should take the blame since he was the one who won the spot-kick when center-half Japhet Tanganga took him down.

Haji Wright celebrates after scoring Coventry City's second goal of the Sky Bet Championship match against Millwall at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The good news is that the two worked things out amicably, even though O’Hare appeared to be dismayed that Wright’s rock had damaged his scissors. However, it appears that Robins should decide who will be the team’s official penalty taker moving forward. Although Matty Godden has done so in the past, Wright ought to be the one leading the team going ahead after leading them to success at his former club in Turkey.

City’s real deal

The American international increased his season total to 11 goals as he keeps proving to the Sky Blues that he is the real deal, even though he is still a work in progress. That is not an attack. Remember that even though Viktor Gyokeres scored 22 goals for the team in the previous season, Mark Robins thought there were still areas in his game that needed improvement.

The manager’s only complaint regarding Wright concerned his first-half miss, hitting the post from roughly four yards out. That would have altered the game’s trajectory and handed City an early lead. Haji also very well may have been winning the match ball. What matters most, though, is that he played with a lot of confidence and used his spot-kick expertly.

The way he deceived Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic into believing he was going to shoot his second goal across him and in at the far post was equally cunning. Instead, he banged to the near post, causing the keeper to change positions and leaving him only able to help it into his own net.

Fortress CBS

Coventry City fans in full voice at the CBS Arena against Millwall

With their hard-earned three points, City moved up to sixth position and back into the play-off spots, maintaining their stellar home record of one Championship loss at the CBS Arena thus far. The only loss came at the hands of West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at the end of October.

16 league games are included in that span, with seven victories and eight draws. When asked what he believed to be the key to that success at home, Robins replied, “I suppose good players.” Naturally, there is also the part that the supporters play in creating the unique ambiance that the stadium has become known for in recent years with their amazing collection of player songs.

Going for the jugular

The fact that City’s victory was yet another illustration of their players performing below par but yet managing to win was one of the game’s most satisfying features. After a difficult first half in which they fell short of expectations, the Sky Blues demonstrated in the second half that they possess the quality and motivation to overwhelm opponents with a string of goals.

Haji Wright’s rapid double in three minutes against the Lions sealed the victory, just as they destroyed Sheffield Wednesday with three goals in seven minutes last midweek. At times, it seems like the players should report during halftime and receive a reprimand from the manager before returning and carrying out his directives.

Undoubtedly, after struggling in the first half due to a badly given goal, Coventry dominated and controlled the remainder of the match, appearing fully deserving of their victory.
