After fielding an ineligible player in their Continental League Cup match against Sunderland on Wednesday night, Aston Villa may be punished; this could have an impact on Manchester United’s ability to advance further in the competition.

After joining Villa from Arsenal in January, Noelle Maritz played just a supporting role in their 7-0 victory over Sunderland, securing their place in the quarterfinals as Group A victors.

However, Maritz had previously represented Arsenal in three games earlier in the competition—against Southampton, Tottenham, and Bristol City.

Mail Sport understands that the Football Association are investigating, with rules stating that players cannot play for more than one club in the competition.

The FA’s rules say: ‘Any Club found to have played an ineligible Player in a Cup Match or Cup Matches shall be in breach of these Rules and the matter shall be referred to an Independent Tribunal for determination pursuant to Rule 3.7.1(d).

Martiz had already turned out for Arsenal in the Continental League Cup and players are not allowed to play for two clubs in the competition in the same season

“The Independent Tribunal may, subject to Rule 8.14.3,: (a) order that the opposition Club be awarded the Cup Match or Cup Matches; or (c) make any other order that the Independent Tribunal may deem appropriate.”

“Only in cases where the ineligibility is related to the Player’s status or stems from the failure to obtain an International Transfer Certificate may the Independent Tribunal decide not to order that the Cup Match be awarded to the opposing Club.”

‘The Independent Tribunal may determine not to order that the Cup Match be awarded to the opposition Club only in circumstances where the ineligibility is due to the failure to obtain an International Transfer Certificate or where the ineligibility is related to the Player’s status.’

Possible ramifications include Villa being expelled from the competition. The situation would become complicated if the victory is awarded to Sunderland, which the rules appear to suggest is the default position.

Only two teams that finish in second place in their group progress to the knockouts alongside the five winners and Chelsea, who automatically qualify due to their participation in the Champions League.

Should Sunderland be awarded three points, they would finish on 10 – one more than Manchester United, who were beaten by rivals City in their final group game.

Tottenham, who are currently on seven points, play Southampton on Thursday and could also finish one point ahead of United if they win their game.

If Villa’s victory on Wednesday were taken away from them, they would still end with a stronger goal differential, which would mean the Red Devils would be eliminated from the tournament. However, Villa would be tied with United on points.

The United manager, Bruce Skinner, stated that it would be a “mockery” if his team suffered as a result of an error made by another club.

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner said it would be a 'mockery' if his side were negatively impacted

You have to be aware, which you obviously are. Of course, mistakes can occur, but Manchester United shouldn’t suffer as a result. stated Skinner.

If we did that, I believe it would make a mockery of the league. Thus, I contend that given how hard we’ve had to work for it, we should ensure that Manchester United succeeds.

In a prior instance, Reading was eliminated from the tournament after it was discovered that they had fielded an ineligible player in 2014.

Despite being cup-tied and having returned to Villa earlier this month following a loan spell at Reading, Freya Gregory did not travel with the team for Wednesday’s match.
