Alan Shearer turns the air blue after Gary Lineker reads out ‘unkind’ Newcastle tweet

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has not seen his boyhood club win a major trophy in his lifetime but the club’s record goal scorer is sure that wait will one day come to an end

Alan Shearer hopes he is ‘still around’ when Newcastle United finally end their trophy drought – but the Magpies legend has ‘no doubt’ it will happen.

Newcastle’s wait for silverware will go into a 56th year after the black-and-whites were knocked out of the FA Cup quarter-finals by holders Manchester City at the weekend. Newcastle also exited the last eight of the Carabao Cup earlier this season following an agonising penalty shootout defeat against Chelsea.

Although Newcastle reached the Carabao Cup final last year – on an afternoon part-owner Amanda Staveley vowed they would one day ‘win the lot’ – this was the first time in more than two decades that the black-and-whites had even made the last eight of both cups in a single season. That is how poor Newcastle’s cup record has been.

You have to go back to 1969 for Newcastle’s Fairs Cup win and 1955 for the last time the Magpies lifted the FA Cup, which Gary Lineker highlighted after spotting a sobering statistic on social media.

“That’s another season now without a trophy,” he said on the Rest is Football podcast. “This is a bit unkind of me, but I saw a tweet by somebody this morning.

“He went, ‘It’s now officially 69 years without a major trophy for Newcastle. Here’s a thread of 14 clubs who have won a trophy more recently than the Geordies.’ Apologies, here, Alan. ‘Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Southampton, Wolves, Oxford United, Ipswich Town, QPR, Wimbledon, Luton Town, Coventry City, Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Swansea City’ and I’m going to add Leicester City.”

Shearer, turning the air blue, told the user to do one, before adding: “I don’t mean it! I get that. I understand that. I hope I’m still around when we win it. It will happen one day. I have no doubt about it. It will happen one day.”
