Sunderland reject Birmingham City transfer offer

Sunderland declines a transfer bid from Birmingham City
Sunderland Nation/Sports Illustrated claims that the Blues have made an offer for the 30-year-old player, but it has been turned down.

This month, Pritchard has been linked to Birmingham City, who are now managed by former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.

Early on Sunday morning, reports indicated that Mowbray was eager to get back together with the attacking midfielder at St Andrews, and that the Blues had also finally made an approach.

The Blues are in the market for attacking reinforcements this month, reports have suggested, with Pritchard very much fitting that bill.

Interestingly, despite the above offer being rejected, the Sunderland Nation report claims that Pritchard is “still almost certain” to leave Sunderland, and during the January transfer window, too.

Alex Pritchard’s contract situation at Sunderland

The aforementioned information is released as Alex Pritchard’s Sunderland contract is getting closer to expiration.

Since the 30-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of June, he is, in theory, free to reach a pre-contract agreement with a different party this month in preparation for a summer move.

It makes sense for him to leave in January since, according to certain rumors, Sunderland has no intention of offering him a new contract.

Alex Pritchard’s Sunderland career in numbers so far, as per Transfermarkt
Season Division Matches (All comps) Goals (All comps) Assists (All comps)
2021/22 League One 47 4 13
2022/23 Championship 43 4 7
2023/24 Championship 25 1 5

Despite this, though, there have been claims elsewhere that Pritchard is holding out for a contract offer and prefers to remain at the club, at least for the next six months.

Turkish teams are vying with Birmingham City for Pritchard.
Unfortunately, Birmingham City may not have the luxury of waiting until the summer to finalize a deal—there are other interested parties this month.

Sivasspor, a team in the Turkish Super Lig, has reportedly expressed interest in the offensive midfielder.

According to Ertan Suzgun, those reports first appeared on Sunderland Nation.

Beale Michael on Alex Pritchard
The aforementioned information is relevant to Pritchard, who is still a key member of Sunderland’s team under newly appointed manager Michael Beale.

This has also been acknowledged, as Beale recently informed the media that he was content with Pritchard at the moment.

Beale, via the Shields Gazette, stated about Pritchard last week: “I think at this point in time, he’s in the starting XI, he’s playing well, and he’s fit and healthy.”

“I’m not familiar with the specifics of it [the previous incident], and the club hasn’t brought it up to me. Moving forward and upwards, that’s my perspective. Even though the team makes all of the decisions, he is currently playing well and is a member of the team.

“He and I are content with one other. Although May is a long way off and anything may happen, the club has requested me to observe the players and provide input based on my observations while we still have 20 games left in January.

“I’m still going through that process but at this moment in time, everyone can see how well Alex Pritchard is playing and the fans really appreciate him as well.”

Watching Pritchard’s progress carefully in the lead-up to the transfer deadline on February 1st will undoubtedly be interesting.
