Wrexham star Elliot Lee bites back at FA Cup rival after seeing Red Dragons claim derby bragging rights in third-round win over Shrewsbury

Elliot Lee dedicated Wrexham’s FA Cup third-round victory to Tom Flanagan after the Shrewsbury defender made fun of him for being “full of semi-pro players.”

WHAT LEE SAID

Lee was thinking about those remarks at the final siren. The midfielder for Wrexham told S4C, looking back on yet another encouraging victory for Phil Parkinson’s club: “We knew as a team the importance of the game coming into it.” Given their size and physicality as a squad and the evident local animosity, it was always going to be a struggle. The boys, in my opinion, did an excellent job today; we came here to accomplish our specific goals. It could have been even more, in my opinion. We had a ton of semi-pro players last year, and I’d like to dedicate this fantastic performance to one of their guys, Tom Flanagan. That one is yours, buddy!

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham advanced to the fourth round of the previous season, but lost to Sheffield United in a Bramall Lane rematch. They now want to play in another glamorous match in 2024. Regarding treating the competition seriously, Lee continued, “It’s very important to us.” Every day, the gaffer instills in us the significance of this cup and the club’s history. For the fans, we always want to give our all when we perform. It means a lot to them to come here and be able to brag. We are excited to be drawn in the next round and are hoping for even better results.

WHAT NEXT FOR WREXHAM?

In addition to their success in the cup, Wrexham is a candidate for promotion again in 2023–2024. As Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the club’s co-owners, put together big plans, Phil Parkinson’s team is leading League Two with players like Paul Mullin and Lee committing to new deals.
