Vincent Kompany praises his Bayern Munich side for 4-0 win over SSV Ulm, admits “these kinds of games are not always easy”

The DFB-Pokal first round is designed to be tricky for teams in the Bundesliga. While teams in the Regionalliga have already played between three-to-five competitive games and teams in the second and third divisions of Germany have already played two competitive games, teams in the Bundesliga play their first competitive match in the DFB-Pokal this season. The likes of TSG Hoffenheim and FSV Mainz struggled terribly against their lower division counterparts today and it would not have been too much of a surprise if Bayern Munich had also experienced real struggles, despite the massive gap in quality between them and their DFB-Pokal first round opponents SSV Ulm.

But a good start and a performance that became more confident as the game wore on saw Bayern ease past their opponents and Kompany made sure to highlight how well the team managed to overcome the difficult circumstances, as captured by via @iMiaSanMia: “I’m happy for the team first and foremost. We got off to a good start and took a 2-0 lead. I’m particularly happy that we kept a clean sheet. I’ve had a long career as a player and know that this kind of game is not always easy. We were serious and disciplined. 4-0 is a good result, we move on.”

And so they move on, as the Bavarians next competitive match sees them face off against VFL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday. This will be the first time Bayern will start the Bundesliga off on a Sunday in over a decade due to failing to win the title last season. But the team proved its’ ability overcome different circumstances today and it bodes well for the club’s ability to shake off any lingering embarrassment over last season and win against Wolfsburg.
