Millwall boss makes transfer vow as Leeds United braced for ‘fresh offer’ from Premier League club

The new Championship season is almost here, and both Millwall and QPR will now be ramping up their match preparations ahead of kicking off their respective campaigns this weekend. The Lions take on Watford in their opener, while QPR have an even trickier task against promotion hopefuls West Brom.

Both sides have strengthened to varying degrees this summer, and both will be hoping to compete for the top half after difficult campaigns of last. In the meantime, we have rounded up all the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding the Championship.

Harris on Millwall aims

Neil Harris has been speaking about Millwall’s aims for the season as they prepare to kick off the new campaign. Asked if the Lions can compete for the top half, he said, “I hope so. It’s twofold. Firstly, we finished last season brilliantly and ended up with five wins in a row and eight from 13 to propel us into a comfortable 13th place finish in the end. Of course we want to better that but then you can’t hide from the fact that the current squad obviously found it difficult for the vast part of the season before I arrived.”

On the club’s transfer efforts, he added: “We can’t lose sight of the importance of a transfer window and that we can continue to add to the group because ultimately we are largely a similar group to the one last year, barring a few outfield signings. We’ve also lost a few as well who were here on loan so we’ve still got some work to do in that sense.

“What I’ve seen in pre-season is there is a doggedness about us, there is a real togetherness and spirit about us. There is culture at Calmont Road that we’ve created already which is going to be important for us to have success. We are just going to try to add a bit more quality to the group to make it a little bit more rounded.”

Gnonto ‘interest’

Leeds United could see another key star receive concrete interest from the Premier League, with Everton being tipped to return with an offer for Wilfried Gnonto. There were reports claiming the Toffees had moved on from the Italian, but TEAMTalk say a new offer could be incoming from the Premier League side.

Crucially, though, Gnonto will not force his way out of Elland Road after leaning his lesson from last season. The winger refused to play in a bid to force a move before returning to action and remaining at Leeds for the entirety of the season.

Hull close in on deal

Hull City are said to be on the verge of wrapping up a deal for Young Boys goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi, who played in the Champions League last season. According to Hull Live, the Tigers are close to wrapping up the deal and hope to have the stopper available for their Championship opener this weekend.

It’s unclear how much Hull will pay to secure the deal, but it checks an important box for the club after they sold Matt Ingram to Oxford United, leaving them short between the sticks with the new season fast approaching.
