Newcastle United midfielder with two assists in pre-season open to exit

Jamie Miley is open to leaving Newcastle United on loan this summer as he looks to follow in younger brother Lewis’ footsteps.
Lewis broke into Eddie Howe’s first-team last season, making 26 appearances as he became the club’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer and Champions League debutant aged 17.

Jamie could only watch from the stands as he recovered from the serious knee injury he sustained in October. He made his comeback for the under-21s in March, around the same time Lewis last featured for Newcastle.

Lewis missed the remaining 10 games because of a back injury. The teenager was due to report back for pre-season at the beginning of July but suffered a freak metatarsal injury just days before.

“He’s getting there, getting over it but it’s just one of those things in football and we give each other the support we need,” said Jamie when providing an update on his brother.

“I was running near him and I saw him and was like ‘oh my god what’s happened?’ I didn’t expect it to be as bad as it was but it’s one of those things, you’ve just got to pick each other up.

“All the time year. We’re brothers but we’re best mates as well so we’re there to give each other support and tell each other when you need a little kick up the backside.

“Everything happens at different times in football. We’re there to support each other and in the bad times we pick each other up and keep going with it.”

Both appeared for United in pre-season last year, first playing together against Gateshead before heading out to the United States for the Premier League Summer Series.

This time around, while one is unavailable, the other has played a regular part having started the 2-0 win at Hull City as well as come on as a second-half substitute in a 4-1 victory versus Urawa Red Diamonds. Jamie claimed an assist in both friendlies.

Jamie added: “Obviously I was in America last year but I was unfortunate to get the knee injury. I’m hoping to stay fit and I’ve been playing centre-midfield like I have most of my career but obviously dropping in at right-back as well, I’m quite enjoying. Wherever the manager wants to play me, I’ll play there

“You’ve got to earn that trust from him and when you do you’ve got to perform. As long as you keep doing that and showing the manager that he can trust you then hopefully you can go in the right direction.”

Jamie’s ultimate dream is to play alongside his brother in Newcastle’s midfield but admits he may have to take a different path by going out on loan, something the 20-year-old hasn’t yet experienced.

“We’ll see what happens in the next few weeks and before the end of the transfer window and whether I can maybe go out on loan but I’m not sure yet,” he said on his future. “Hopefully the bigger idea is to stay here long-term and do what my brother did, that’s the picture but we’ll see what happens.

“I’d like to stay in the leagues year but anywhere I get the opportunity to play, I just want to play as many minutes as I can on a regular first-team basis so hopefully I can do that this season.”
