VIDEO: Aston Villa friendly turns nasty as defender sent off and unique…. View

Diego Carlos was sent off in Aston Villa’s pre-season defeat to RB Leipzig as his actions instigated a massive brawl.

The teams met for a friendly in New Jersey, with the German club eventually running out as 2-0 winners.

But things looked anything but friendly after the match descended into complete chaos in the dying moments of the first half.

Villa were to find themselves already two goals down and with just 10 players on the pitch before half-time had even arrived after a particularly heated moment.

Centre-back Carlos had been tasked with defending striker Lois Openda in a pairing which grew more and more heated throughout the game.

Both of them had already been shown a yellow card early in the match with the two tousling for dominance from the outset.

In the end, it was Openda who got the better of Carlos as he found a way through in the 41st minute and scored Leipzig’s second goal.

Having doubled his team’s lead, he then turned to the Villa defender and appeared to exchange a few charged words with him.

Evidently, the Brazilian did not come away from the encounter a happy man.

He seemed to then put his arm across Openda’s chest, with the Belgian then falling to the floor.

And some of the incident was even shown via a body cam on Villa forward Morgan Rogers.

It took the referee quite some time to regain a semblance of order on the pitch but in the end, it was Carlos who was punished for the ugly scenes.https:

He was shown a second yellow card and sent marching off the pitch, leaving Unai Emery’s side with a serious disadvantage and a two-goal deficit.

The manager reflected on the match later, explaining that despite the result, the experience would stand his team in good stead going into the 2024/25 Premier League season.

He added that Carlos’ sending off had certainly changed their fortunes in the match significantly.

“We are in preseason and practicing with the team and progressively getting better,” Emery said.

“Today was a match against an opponent of the level we will face in the season. It was a test.
