Fonseca comments on Milan’s 3:2 win over Man City: “We know how to use the ball. Saelemaekers? I hope he stays”

AC Milan kicked off their DIRECTV Soccer Champions Tour 2024 with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Manchester City at Yankee Stadium in New York. The match showcased the Rossoneri’s promising young talent and new tactical approach under manager Paulo Fonseca.

As quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Fonseca expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, particularly their ability to control possession against Pep Guardiola’s side. “We know it’s important for us to have the ball. We want to draw opponents in to find space and accelerate. The team did well, and one of the positive points was our ability to handle the ball,” Fonseca remarked. Milan impressively maintained 57% possession throughout the match, a notable achievement against a Guardiola-coached team.

The Portuguese manager praised the young players who seized their opportunity to shine. “Many young players are getting the chance to work with us because they have quality,” Fonseca stated. “They all did well here, showing courage and personality.” Standout performances came from Lorenzo Colombo, who netted a brace, and Marco Nasti, who scored the winning goal.

Fonseca also addressed the future of some players, noting, “I haven’t decided yet who will stay with us. We need to consider many aspects. Some will struggle to play, like Colombo with Morata and Jovic. They need to play, so it’s better for them to go elsewhere. For others, we’ll see.”

One player who caught Fonseca’s eye was Alexis Saelemaekers. “Alexis is a player I really like for his quality,” the coach enthused. “He’s one of those players every coach wants to have because he can play in many positions. He has confidence, and I’d like him to stay.”

On the right flank, Samuel Chukwueze appears rejuvenated under the new management. The Nigerian winger commented on his improved form: “A year ago, I didn’t start pre-season training, I arrived later. Now I’ve been here from the beginning. I feel good, I like the new coach, he’s given me an opportunity, and it’s important that someone gives you confidence. The fans will see a new Samu this season.”
