Newcastle United plot second Nottingham Forest raid for Miguel replacement after £35m transfer agreed

Anthony Elanga only joined Nottingham Forest from Manchester United 12 months ago
Newcastle United remain interested in Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga, according to reports.

Various sources claimed the Magpies were targeting Elanga during the frantic push to comply with FFP/PSR regulations last month. Forest ultimately signed Elliot Anderson for £35million, with Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos going the other way.

An undisclosed fee for Vlachodimos is thought to have also helped Forest on their balance sheet. However, that may not be the last time Newcastle do business with the Tricky Trees this summer.

Reporter Ben Jacobs has suggested Elanga – who only arrived from Manchester United a year ago for £15million – remains on Eddie Howe’s radar. The Magpies are targeting a right-sided attacker to replace Miguel Almiron and complete their frontline.

Jacob Murphy’s qualities have come under question and Newcastle are yet to sign a first-team right-winger since the Saudi-backed takeover. Elanga impressed in his first season since taking the leap of faith to leave Old Trafford.

Despite playing for a relegation-threatened Forest side, the 22-year-old registered 14 Premier League goal contributions. Arguably his best display came at St James’ Park, where he made two assists in a shock 3-1 Boxing Day win.

Forest want to keep Elanga and are in a strong position due to him penning a five-year contract last summer. As for Almiron, the Magpies would be open to sell if the right offer came along amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

The Paraguayan turns 31 next season and, with two years on his deal, Newcastle can still command a sizable fee. Pro League club Al-Shabab emerged as a potential suitor in the January transfer window.
