Paul Mitchell approves of Newcastle United transfer target after £25m agree

Newcastle United retain a strong interest in AC Milan central defender Malick Thiaw.

The Magpies want to recruit another centre-back this summer after Lloyd Kelly joined on a free transfer from AFC Bournemouth.

Both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are sidelined until later this year with ACL injuries, leaving the defence light on senior bodies.

Kelly offers cover on the left side while Fabian Schar is the only recognised option on the right. Thiaw is one of the players under consideration.

Di Marzio claims United have “returned heavily” for the Thiaw, who is “very much liked” by new sporting director Paul Mitchell. An official bid has not yet been tabled but Newcastle are “very interested”.

“The Milan transfer market continues and after having made official the purchase of [Alvaro] Morata, the Rossoneri will now try to further strengthen the team. In terms of exits, however, Newcastle has returned heavily on Malick Thiaw .

“Newcastle had already been following the German defender at the beginning of the summer but could now come back with force on the player.

“At the moment, no official offers have arrived at the Rossoneri club , but the English team is very interested. The 2001-born player, in fact, is very much liked by the new sporting director Paul Mitchell “.

The 22-year-old made 30 appearances for Milan last season, including the goalless Champions League draw against Newcastle at the San Siro in September. He missed the reverse fixture St James’ Park because of a hamstring injury.

Italian broadcaster SportMediaset – as relayed by Tuttomercato – reported earlier this month Thiaw is not on Milan’s ‘unsellable list’, meaning they could give the deal the ‘green light’ if the Magpies submit an offer between £21million to £25m.

Thiaw is under contract Milan until 2027 after arriving from Schalke 04 two years ago. He has gone to make 54 appearances.
