Doctor View: Defender at risk of failing medical as West Ham make approach for new transfer

Tottenham defender Ryan Sessegnon risks failing his medical at West Ham if an injury outlier emerges, amid his wretched fitness record, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.

The injury expert claims that the English left-back missed the whole of 2023/24 due to fitness issues and even needed surgery in the first half of the campaign.

This comes after the Sunday Mirror reported on 23 June, page 73, that the Hammers have made an approach to sign the left-back who’s also capable of playing on the left wing.

Speaking exclusively with West Ham Zone, Brar, a specialist in Physical Therapy and a Sports Scientist, said:

“The medical would be conducted with the understanding of his injury history and how that would impact his imaging, cardiovascular metrics and so on.

“A club would have to understand that risk and that would be baked into his transfer value.

“A free transfer would perhaps see a lesser signing-on bonus, or something along those lines.

“However, given the fact that he needed surgery at the start of the season and was then ruled out with a hamstring injury for the second half of it, suggests that there could be an outlier that may emerge with his medical.“

West Ham must avoid signing Ryan Sessegnon

The Hammers should avoid signing Sessegnon on a free transfer.

His injury record is concerning, having missed significant game time at Tottenham due to fitness issues.

This raises doubts about his ability to consistently contribute to the team.

Moreover, his form has been inconsistent, failing to live up to the early promise he showed at Fulham and even on a free, this is not a gamble worth taking.
