With Leicester City vying for the £25 million Ex-League One Star

According to TeamTalk, Leicester City is eager to compete with Newcastle United for Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley before the January transfer market opens.

O’Riley, who came up via Fulham’s system, signed a free transfer to MK Dons in 2021 while the team was still in League One. His outstanding play with the Dons ultimately led to a £1.5 million move to Celtic in January 2022, when the Scottish powerhouses triggered his release clause.

The midfielder was brought to Celtic Park by current Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou, who helped the team win back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles.

It was rumored that Leeds United wanted to sign O’Riley at Elland Road during the summer transfer window. They made a £10 million offer for his talents, but Celtic quickly turned it down.

According to TeamTalk, Newcastle is also keen in signing the 23-year-old midfield player, but the Glasgow team is holding out for £25 million. Leicester City is also ready to make a move for the player.

With nine goals in 23 games, O’Riley has had another outstanding season with Celtic in Scotland. He presently leads the team in scoring in all competitions and shares the Premiership top scorer title with Rangers’ sensation Abdallah Sima.

In addition, the playmaker has contributed eight assists to Celtic, five of which have come in the league. O’Riley has contributed more goals to the decisive Prem than any other player has done thus far in the 2023–24 campaign.

Author’s Perspective

After performing so well in his one-year stay with MK Dons prior to joining Celtic, O’Riley appears poised for a return to English football.

But, the Dane has improved significantly since joining League One two years ago, and he may be a great addition for Leicester City as Enzo Maresca’s team pursues promotion back to the Premier League.
