There should not be one unhappy Coventry City supporter right now: View

Coventry City fans will be extremely disappointed with their 2-1 home loss against Cardiff City.

The first own goal was particularly disappointing – and this result has been a setback for the Sky Blues in their quest to secure a top-six place at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

After managing to get to the play-off final at the end of last season, Coventry would have been hoping to get into the play-offs once more but they will be playing in the Championship next season, as things stand.

A finish outside of the top six won’t satisfy supporters considering they were a penalty shootout away from the Premier League less than a year ago, but this season’s second tier is arguably of a higher standard than last term, with many teams at the top end of the division impressing.

Leicester City, despite their recent troubles, have been superb along with Ipswich Town, Leeds United and Southampton.

And with plenty of teams in the mix for the play-offs, it was never going to be an easy task for Mark Robins’ side.

The current state of play at Coventry City

The Sky Blues may have had plenty of stability on the pitch this term under Doug King, but they have faced challenges.

Viktor Gyokeres and Gus Hamer’s departures were always going to be a blow for the club, considering how influential the pair were during their stays at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Plenty of players arrived during the summer as well – and it was always going to take time for those players to settle in – with the Sky Blues struggling earlier in the season.

Right now though, they are still in the mix for the play-offs, with the likes of Ellis Simms and Haji Wright both shining in recent times to keep Coventry high up in the table.

Championship Play-Off Race (5th-11th)
(As of April 3rd) P GD Pts
5 West Bromwich Albion 40 23 68
6 Norwich City 40 14 64
7 Coventry City 39 17 60
8 Preston North End 39 -3 59
9 Middlesbrough 40 3 58
10 Hull City 39 3 58
11 Cardiff City 40 -9 56

Callum O’Hare’s contract expires at the end of the season, which is an obvious concern, but the Midlands club are in a fairly healthy state at the moment.

There are plenty of reasons for Coventry City supporters to be happy

Coventry are in a great situation at the moment despite their recent setback against the Bluebirds.

Despite losing Gyokeres and Hamer, they have done well, with many of their new signings thriving.

The likes of Simms, Wright and Milan van Ewijk have been major successes and they still have Robins at the helm, which can only be a positive considering how talented he is as a head coach.

If they win their game in hand, they will only be one point behind Norwich City and the Canaries aren’t exactly invincible, so they could still make the play-offs and many people would fancy them to do so.

Not only are they doing fairly well in the league, not only do they have a bright future with the talented players they have (with or without O’Hare), but they are also in an FA Cup semi-final.

Beating Wolves to set up a tie against Manchester United, Coventry are set to head to Wembley again.

Not everything is going their way in the league and they have had low moments this season, but Coventry fans should be optimistic and excited.

The ingredients are there for them to enjoy long-lasting success, even if they aren’t promoted at the end of this season.
