Tottenham wants him now, but Liverpool believes they can get a top-of-the-table defender.

Tottenham Hotspur are in the mix to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah amid strong rumours over a move to join Liverpool.

One of Tottenham’s top priorities for the January transfer window will surely be the signing of a new centre back.

Although Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are a great duo, Tottenham’s lack of depth in defense was revealed by their recent absences due to injury and suspension.

Tottenham may now turn their attention to the Bundesliga market in search of at least one additional center back.

Jonathan Tah is being pursued by Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham has reportedly entered the hunt to recruit Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, according to German magazine Kicker.

Tah has reportedly impressed so far this season that Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing him as well.

Tah has a summertime release clause of €18 million (£15 million), but the source states that a January departure is “virtually impossible.”

Leverkusen is leading the Bundesliga and is determined to win this season’s championship over Bayern Munich.

Tah is crucial to those plans and Leverkusen will be without defenders Edmond Tapsoba and Odilon Kossounou for a period due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Tah will be more important than ever in that period, meaning Tottenham face an uphill battle to sign the defender.

Liverpool think they can sign Tah

The mounting Premier League interest will be a blow for Liverpool, who will seemingly have to face major competition for Tah.

The serious injury to Joel Matip means Liverpool are now looking to land another centre back in January.

90min reported over the weekend that Liverpool want Tah and ‘feel a deal could be done’ when the transfer window opens.

Leverkusen’s lack of defensive options in January make that seem a little unlikely but the Reds seemingly had some confidence of a deal.

Tottenham are now posing a threat though with Ange Postecoglou and co ready to battle Jurgen Klopp for Tah’s signature.
