New Leeds United promotion boost as Southampton stumble again in fresh Championship twist

Leeds United remain second in the Championship after Southampton suffered their second defeat in the past three matches, losing 2-1 to Hull City at St Mary’s

Leeds United are in control of their promotion destiny heading down the final stretch after Southampton failed to make the most of their game in hand. Victory for Saints tonight at Hull City would have taken Russell Martin’s side back up to second in the Championship.

But Southampton suffered their second loss in the past three outings, losing 2-1 at St Mary’s. First half goals from Anass Zaroury and Fabio Carvalho stunned the home faithful.

Boss Russell Martin made a triple half-time sub, throwing on Che Adams, David Brooks and Joe Aribo to inject some life into his side. Aribo registered late on but it proved too little too late. The result moves the Tigers back into the play-off places.

Ipswich Town leapfrogged Southampton in the standings after a thrilling home win over bottom club Rotherham United. Tom Eaves put the Millers ahead in the second minute before the Tractor Boys turned the contest on its head after goals from Wes Burns (2) and Kieffer Moore. It looked like goals from Hakeem Odoffin and Cafu (penalty) had rescued a point for the visitors but Omari Hutchinson had the final word, grabbing a dramatic winner deep into added on time.
