Mark Robins criticizes a Coventry City duo saying, “I want to kill them.” following an on-field penalty call,

After Coventry City overcame Millwall at the CBS Arena, thanks to two goals from Haji Wright (the first from the penalty spot), the Sky Blues went on to win 2-1 and move back into the play-off places. However, Mark Robins was not pleased with the way his players decided who would take the 67th-minute spot-kick to tie the score, after Wright and Callum O’Hare quickly settled the score in a game of rock, paper, scissors.

We did a really professional job – Mark Robins on Coventry's win over Oxford

In his news conference after the game, the City manager joked, “I’m going to kill them!” but he was also making a serious point. When asked if City had a specific player assigned to take penalties, he replied, “Well, no, but I will do that.” However, in my opinion, the issue is who is willing to accept the punishment. I have no issues since Callum is now self-assured and Haji was a consistent penalty taker in Turkey. However, if I become involved in that, it will undoubtedly cast question on someone’s character, so I will let them resolve it on their own. If they fail to do so, though, they really are in danger.

“Thankfully they have got the wherewithal and calm heads to deal with that situation. The good thing is they both want to score. They both want to take the penalty and get on the scoresheet. Obviously we have two really decent penalty takers there but we need to be a little bit more scientific than that.”

He responded, “Yes, absolutely, but they are brilliant lads and if they have sorted that out between themselves then that’s fine,” when asked if he would prefer that they resolve their differences without fighting. I want to kill them, but I’m not going to get involved in every little micromanaged choice because I don’t think that’s proper.

When asked who will face penalties going forward, the manager replied, “Let’s see.” Haji accepts the penalty if he is on the field. Callum may accept penalties if he is on the field. Although he has missed a few recently, Matty Godden is also a rather dependable penalty taker on most occasions.

“I believe that whoever is interested and believes they will win will win.” Haji can take penalties pretty well, but Callum scored the last time we had one and is very self-assured, so I have no concerns, especially if they take it and put it in the back of the net. All I want is for it to strike the net’s back.
