INTERVIEW: Haji Wright on his brace and Millwall fightback

Haji Wright noted that although it was a challenging game, he and his teammates gave a strong performance, coming back to defeat Millwall.

In a three-minute span, City finished the turnaround with goals from the striker in the second half.

After the victory, City is once again in the top six, and Wright reflected on another successful afternoon for the Sky Blues.

Looking back at the performance…

“The second part of the concert was excellent. We demonstrated our excellence.

“We showed our quality in the later stages of the game and took the three points with us, but it was a difficult game and they did not make it easy for us.”

The first half…

“We should win the game because we know we have the quality. Although it was tough for us to go down so quickly in the game, we still wanted to win.

“They kind of locked in defensively and tried to stifle our game after they scored. We were fortunate that they made an attempt, and we capitalized on it.

“We could demonstrate our abilities. It is advantageous for us that a large number of our players are capable of driving with the ball and making room for themselves and other players.

Their threat…

They definitely made things difficult for us. They emerged and played the entire game with their physicality on display. We found it difficult to handle that, and they succeeded in their mission.

They posed a serious risk from corners and set pieces. They attempted to capitalize on it by going long on throw-ins and corners. Their guys are particularly skilled in the air, which caused us difficulties.

“It was challenging, but we performed well.”

Team talk at half-time….

“The coach mentioned that we had to improve on a few areas in addition to our strengths in order to strengthen our performance and secure the victory.

“He gave us instructions to press forward, maintain composure while handling the ball, and attack the open spaces.”

On the penalty…

“Well, once I won the penalty, Callum and I quickly discussed who would take it.

We engaged in a round of rock, paper, scissors.

“I know Callum is amazing at taking penalties, he has that little stutter step, and he will probably score 90 percent of the time, but I am confident myself, so I wanted to take it.

Fortunately, I prevailed in the rock, paper, scissors game. I chose a rock! My throw was a touch delayed, but that’s life.

“As players, we are both ravenous. It was nice to score and support the squad; we want to be successful and demonstrate our abilities on the field.

His second goal…

“Callum is an excellent athlete. As you can see, he dribbled the ball past two defenders and sprinted 50 yards to get the assist. He then perfectly set up a pass for me, and although it was a good shot, it went in.

“Usually, the keepers cheat a little bit when you open up and form up like you’re going to shoot a long distance. I was thus hoping for it, and he fulfilled it.

On the team now pushing forward up the table…

It was challenging for us to click early on as a team—new players and those from the previous season.

“We are all fighting to get on the pitch because we have a really good team with good players in every position, and we are starting to gel.”
