Do Coventry City supporters really get value for money at the CBS Arena?

It can be very expensive to watch any football team play both at home and away, but some clubs offer better value for their supporters than others—Coventry City, for instance, has shown this in recent years.

The Premier League has grown so profitable that there is now a great deal at stake in the fight to stay in the division. Coventry had the worst day of the season last year when Mark Robins’ team narrowly missed making a return to the top flight following an incredible campaign that ended in defeat in the play-off final.

The Sky Blues were doomed to another season in the second division after Fankaty Dabo’s missed penalty kick. Luton Town emerged victorious in the play-off final. Coventry had to rebuild and start over, but they made excellent use of the money obtained by the sales of Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer.

This season, their hiring encouraged supporters, and they are currently in a position to battle for the top six, with Coventry and many other Championship teams fighting for two spots.

Coventry are competing at the CBS Arena this season after a number of issues raised doubts over their future in the stadium earlier this year. It has been the home of the Sky Blues since 2021 after a two-year period away from the stadium before then.

Many will have to consider the cost of being able to support their team every week, both at home and away, when the cost of living is at an all-time high. The ticket is, of course, the one expense you can’t avoid if you want to watch your team play, on top of all the travel, meal, and drink costs.

This season, the average cost of a home ticket to see the Sky Blues is approximately £460. The adult lowest ticket is £400. For individuals who can only afford the cheapest ticket available, that means Coventry has the ninth most costly tickets.

Large teams like Watford, Norwich City, and Leeds United, all of whom have participated in the Premier League recently, surpass the £400 mark. In contrast, the bottom teams in the division, such as Millwall, Rotherham United, and Sheffield Wednesday, all have higher expensive tickets based on this criterion.

But, in terms of the average season ticket price, Coventry fall to 12th in the standings with their £460 price point. Is that good value in the circumstances? We take a look, here.

Of course, some sports fans attend games purely for the enjoyment of the day or the chance to be with loved ones, but sports are also about entertainment and the thrill of victory.

After battling through Leagues One and Two to reclaim their place in the second division and overcoming issues related to the stadium, the team feels closer than ever. They have also been one of the best teams in the entire EFL in terms of their growth and development season after season.

Despite losing two key players over the summer, that has been no different this season, with Robins’ side competing for a play-off place once more, and they have been able to enjoy it on home soil in particular as well.

They have played a very strong, if not spectacular, role in keeping the opposition to only 13 goals, which is the fourth-best record in the division for home games. They are also among the hardest teams to defeat, even though they may not be as entertaining as teams like Plymouth and Ipswich, who have seen 59 and 56 league goals scored in home games, respectively.

Despite having scored 22 goals in 15 home games, fans should continue to show up at the cost of a matchday ticket because Robins and company are likely to make the playoffs again given their current seventh-place standing.
