Matz Sels, the former goalkeeper for Newcastle United, is scheduled to have a medical at Nottingham Forest.

For the 31-year-old Belgium international, Forest and Ligue 1 team Strasbourg have reached an agreement for £6 million. Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano claims that Sels is traveling to Nottingham in order to finish his physical on the day of the deadline.

Romano tweeted: “Nottingham Forest agree deal to sign Matz Sels as new goalkeeper, here we go! Strasbourg to receive fee around €6/7m as deal has been completed. Sels, flying to Nottingham for medical.”

Sels played 14 games for Newcastle in the 2016–17 Championship season, however after a number of subpar performances in goal, he swiftly lost ground to Karl Darlow in the starting lineup. After being promoted to Anderlecht, the goalkeeper was loaned out to Strasbourg for a fee of £3.5 million, therefore he was unable to play in the Premier League for Newcastle.

Before Nick Pope arrived in June 2022 for £10 million, Sels set a club record when he signed for Newcastle in 2016 for a reported £6.5 million from Gent.

Sels has established himself as Strasbourg’s captain in Ligue 1 and has earned six caps for the Belgium national team, despite a challenging time on Tyneside.

Sels might play for Forest later this month at the City Ground against Newcastle United. On Saturday, February 10, Forest plays The Magpies (5:30pm kickoff).
