Sheffield United rivals Everton and Nottingham Forest risk points deduction after Premier League charges

The Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations have been broken by two of Sheffield United’s relegation rivals. The two clubs that have been sanctioned are Everton and Nottingham Forest; it is possible that both clubs will lose points.

Due to a financial rule violation, Everton has already been deducted 10 points this season. While this is an appealing decision, it is their second charge of the year, and additional points could be taken away, which could be harmful to their fight to avoid the drop. The new charges pertain to the teams’ 2022–2023 season-ending evaluation period accounts.

An impartial panel has been tasked with reviewing the cases of Forest and Everton prior to any decision being made on punishment. Right now, Everton is eight points ahead of the Blades in the Premier League standings, while Forest is fifteenth, eleven points ahead of United, the team that holds the league championship.

“Nottingham Forest acknowledges the Premier League’s statement confirming that the club has been charged with a breach of the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules today,” the club said in a statement.

“The club intends to continue to cooperate fully with the Premier League on this matter and are confident of a speedy and fair resolution.”

Everton went on to say: “Everton Football Club acknowledges the Premier League’s decision to refer a breach of Profit & Sustainability rules (PSR) to an independent Premier League commission for the evaluation term concluding with the 2022–2023 season.

“This relates to a period which covers seasons 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23. It therefore includes financial periods (2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22) for which the Club has already received a 10-point sanction. The Club is currently appealing that sanction.

“The Premier League does not have guidelines which prevent a Club being sanctioned for alleged breaches in financial periods which have already been subject to punishment, unlike other governing bodies, including the EFL.

“As a result – and because of the Premier League’s new commitment to deal with such matters “in-season” – the Club is in a position where it has had no option but to submit a PSR calculation which remains subject to change, pending the outcome of the appeal.

“The Club must now defend another Premier League complaint which includes the very same financial periods for which it has already been sanctioned, before that appeal has even been heard.

“The Club believes that there is an obvious flaw in the Premier League’s regulations, which is the cause of this. Everton can reassure its followers that it will keep up its defense of the position during the current appeal and, if necessary, at any upcoming commission; the effect on supporters will be taken into consideration during that process.”
