Sheffield United now pushing to sign £12m Egan replacement with permanent deal possible

Chris Mepham, a defender for Bournemouth, is being pursued by Sheffield United this month as Chris Wilder steps up his recruitment campaign.

Ben Brereton-Diaz was already signed by the Blades this month, and Chris Wilder now wants additional fresh players.

Kasper Schmeichel and Danny Ward have been linked to United in an attempt to bolster the goalkeeping position, though those rumors have cooled somewhat.

And now Alan Nixon claims that United is trying to make a move for Mepham, the defender for Bournemouth.

Nixon, via his Patreon, claims that Mepham is a target for United, and Wilder is hopeful that the prospect of playing first team football would entice the Wales international to the S2. If United can raise the necessary funds, rumors have it that the Cherries would even be amenable to a long-term agreement.

Due to the major injuries sustained by Chris Basham and John Egan, United has had a deficient defense this season. To further reduce defensive resources, Luke Thomas’ loan has been terminated by Wilder.

This is the sort of smart signing that United need to be looking to do and if it can be done permanently then all the better.

Mepham is not just a valuable asset to us right now, but he also has championship potential should we lose.

It’s unclear what Bournemouth would ask for Mepham at this time given that they paid about £12 million for him in 2019.

However, it would be ideal if United could reach a permanent agreement and free up the domestic loan slot for someone else.
