Keith Downie claims that Sunderland would be unable to turn down an offer of £20 million for Jack Clarke, a target for West Ham United.

Via his personal X account, the Sky Sports News reporter gave an update on West Ham’s interest in Clarke on January 9th. He disclosed that he would “expect” Sunderland to keep onto the 23-year-old attacker in January.

However, should the Black Cats receive an offer they can’t refuse for their “prize asset” they could be tempted to sell, with a fee of at least £20million expected to be the minimum amount they would accept.

As of 9 January, Dharmesh Sheth, Downie’s colleague at Sky Sports, revealed via his X account that the Hammers are considering a move for Clarke. Clarke leads Sunderland in goals scored this season with 12 from 26 Championship games.

large sums of money

Undoubtedly, Clarke is performing well for Sunderland, who are sixth in the Championship standings right now. However, £20 million is a lot of money for a young player who, although successful in England’s second division, found it difficult to make an impression in his last Premier League move.

Details of Tottenham's sell-on clause revealed as Jack Clarke linked with January move - The Spurs News

At the age of 18, the winger moved from Leeds United to Tottenham, West Ham’s London rivals, in 2019.

He had a difficult time adjusting to life in north London and, after three loan stints in the capital during which he made only four first-team appearances for Spurs, finally sealed a permanent move to Sunderland.

As a result, Clarke won’t remember London well. Now that he is 23 years old, the attacker has grown up and may try to use his successful transfer to West Ham to quell the ghosts of his failed move to Tottenham.

However, £20 million is still a significant sum of money for the player, especially in January, and David Moyes would be better off using some of the attacking options he already has for the remainder of the year.
