According to Mark Robins, he and Doug King, the club owner, are “talking” about bolstering Coventry City’s roster during the January transfer window. Despite the clear need for a little more talent in a few spots, not the least of which is central midfield, the Sky Blues manager has been downplaying his prospects of bringing in new players in recent weeks.

Yasin Ayari, a loan player who was sent to Blackburn Rovers this week after being recalled by his parent club Brighton, leaves City’s relatively small squad shorthanded in numbers at a time when they are primed to make a run for the play-offs in the 20 games left in the season.

When asked if he planned to sign any new players this month or find someone to replace Ayari, the manager replied, “Well, we are talking, but ultimately it’s down to Doug and what we can do.” As I’ve already stated, we take a broad approach. We talk all the time. Though we have different opinions, goals, and desires, we constantly communicate and stay in touch. All we can do is wait and see. The honest response is, I’m not sure. I have no idea how things will turn out.

Ayari, a youthful midfield player, has been out of favor lately. He hasn’t been utilized as a substitute in the last five games, which led to his recall, which is in the best interests of both teams.

Liam Kelly has also been absent from the field for a number of weeks, and on a few instances, he was not even included in the matchday squad. However, Ayari’s exit should allow him to rejoin the bench. In contrast, center-half Kyle McFadzean hasn’t been used as a substitute recently because the team has been playing a back four instead of a back three.

When asked if either of the players—who have summer expiration dates on their contracts—were likely to go out on loan or take on any new projects during this window, Robins replied, “I have no idea on that.” They continue to be available for selection and are undoubtedly a member of the squad.
