Transfer to Wolves piles on frustration for manager – Speaks out, understands financial reasoning

On transfer deadline day, Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Carlos Forbs from Ajax on a loan deal with an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

The Eredivisie side invested €14m plus bonuses to sign the winger from Manchester City in August 2023. He managed three goals and five assists from 1,766 minutes last season.

Back in May, the Dutch club appointed Francesco Farioli as their manager for this season.

The Italian believes he lost two key players in Forbs and Steven Bergwijn. The duo left for Wolves and Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad respectively.

Farioli has been speaking to the Amsterdam club’s official channel, where he expressed his disappointment over losing the 20-year-old and Bergwijn, and Ajax outgoings generally.

His comments are relayed by Algemeen Dagblad, who state: ‘Farioli believes that he has clearly lost two important players in the past ‘long and difficult transfer period’. Among others, Steven Bergwijn (Al-Ittihad) and Carlos Forbs (Wolverhampton Wanderers) left.’

The manager is then quoted as saying: “I wanted to keep all the players, because they were all important to the process. On the other hand, we know the financial situation of the club and the need and desire to restore it.”

On August 31st, De Telegraaf reported Wolves have paid €2.5m in loan fee and will cover the player’s full salary of €1.5m per year.

It was also stated Gary O’Neil’s side have to make the Portugal U21 international’s stay permanent for €13.5m if he makes 10 starts this season.
