It’s our jobs as managers to put the best team out to win games: Leicester boss confirmed player exit

Ireland’s latest striker Tom Cannon appears to be on his way out of Leicester City as Steve Cooper leans on alternatives for their Premier League survival.

The 21-year-old Liverpudlian was left on the bench for Monday’s opening draw against Tottenham Hotspur with the Foxes manager subsequently suggesting movement before the transfer window closes.

Cannon made his senior Ireland debut against Portugal in June – a year after stalling his international allegiance amid interest from England’s U21s – and was tipped to be one of Ireland’s top-flight forward options.

Yet it seems last year’s £7m purchase from Everton could be heading back to the Championship, with Sheffield United keen to broker a deal, potentially an initial loan.

“I can better answer that when we know what the squad will end up looking like,” Cooper told the Leicester Mercury when asked about Cannon.

“For sure Tom’s a good young player who has a future in front of him. It’s our jobs as managers to put the best team out to win games, but it’s also to make sure we put the right programmes on for the younger players.

“We will do that with Tom. What that looks like at the moment I don’t know, but he’s very much part of today’s work. Until things change, that’s how it will be. But I’m probably better to answer that one closer to the end of the window.”

Cannon featured 16 times in Leicester’s promotion-winning season but was a peripheral figure during the run-in. The club were supposed to be suffering a striker crisis due to the Financial Fair Play limitations but Jamie Vardy returned from injury to equalise against Spurs.
