The secret to keeping Mr Versatile contented at Coventry City

Joel Latibeaudiere made an immediate impression on Coventry City, particularly in his natural position at center back. After five months, though, the Swansea summer acquisition has established himself as Mr. Versatile for the Sky Blues, playing full-back, wing-back, and most lately, a holding role in the middle of the field with great success.

When asked earlier in the season if the 23-year-old would be used in the position he plays for Jamaica, Mark Robins downplayed the idea and gave the impression that he wouldn’t try it even though his team was thin when Ben Sheaf was sidelined due to injury.

However, Latibeaudiere was used as a substitute by the manager more recently, testing the waters before a man-of-the-match performance at Leeds United proved the quality of the player in that area of the field. This was further supported by another excellent performance on Boxing Day against Sheffield Wednesday.

After the 2-0 victory, Latibeaudiere made the following statement: “I have always been a defender at heart, but the coach told me at the beginning of the season that I was brought in to play several positions. He wanted to bring me in for that reason, among other others.

For my country, I have played midfield, center back, and right back, so it’s not like I’m being asked to do something I can’t. I feel more confident knowing that I can approach the management and ask to be placed in those roles.

“I am gaining more experience and learning from excellent coaches like Dennis Lawrence, Adi Viveash, and Mark Robins, which is an additional tool in my toolbox.” It works better for me the more tools I have in my toolbox.

It’s becoming evident that Robins wants to have Latibeaudiere in his lineup, and after settling on a back four for the last eight games, midfield appears to be the best option. There would be a chance for another center-half if Liam Kitching’s red card is not overturned, though Luis Binks would be the most logical choice because of his natural left footedness.

When asked if it bothers him that he hasn’t established himself in a regular position, Latibeaudiere replied, “Maybe a little, but the gaffer always gives me an opportunity to nail down a position, whether that is midfield, right-back, or center-back.”

The player continued, underscoring Robins’ aptitude at man-management, saying, “I know I will always get a game under the gaffer, he always speaks to me.” I am quite clear with him, and as players, that’s all we need for—to be clear and aware of his plans going into the games. I’m pleased that I have that clarity, so that’s excellent. I’m content with the parts I play.
