PL club’s £27m transfer prompts Wolves boss Gary O’Neil to monitor £100,000-a-week striker

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil is now said to be monitoring a Premier League striker, after his club recently made a £27 million signing that threatens his minutes.

The club swooped early doors to bring in the Norway international from Celta Vigo, after he scored 13 goals in 2023/24.

Strand Larsen will hopefully turn out to be the prolific number nine many Wolves fans have longed for since the days of prime Raul Jimenez.

Some have been wondering if Wolves will sign another centre-forward before the transfer window closes.

There was interest in Che Adams before he joined Torino, and links to Armando Broja still persist.

It is possible O’Neil could sanction a move for another centre-forward as cover for Strand Larsen, and he now apparently has Michail Antonio of West Ham United in his sights.

Wolves interested in Michail Antonio again after West Ham signed Niclas Fullkrug

It has been reported by Give Me Sport that Wolves manager O’Neil has been monitoring Michail Antonio and could offer him a fresh opportunity at Molineux.

Supposedly Wolves are among a host of clubs taking an interest in the 34-year-old.

West Ham recently signed Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund for £27 million, and his signing will no doubt impact Antonio’s potential to play regularly.

Indeed, it is stated that the signing has resulted in O’Neil’s interest.

According to the publication, O’Neil is interested in adding a striker with Premier League experience to his squad.

Antonio has just one year left on his £100,000 per week contract at the London Stadium.

Antonio would need to accept back-up role

This is an interesting claim, and certainly, the signing of Fullkrug by West Ham is not good news for Antonio and his hopes of playing regularly..

It will be very interesting to see if Wolves do make a move. Of course, he is a player the club have shown interest in before – in January 2023, the club reportedly submitted a loan enquiry for the striker.

Antonio has been vocal in the past about playing regularly.

Given his age, he would not necessarily be able to do that at Wolves, who have obviously just signed Strand Larsen.

Antonio would need to be comfortable playing a back-up role at Molineux, and it is also questionable whether Wanderers would pay him the same money he is supposedly on now. Wolves would perhaps want him to take a wage cut if he was to come in this summer.
