Bayern Munich director of sport Max Eberl comments on Joshua Kimmich’s status

Bayern Munich’s Max Eberl has recently been speaking about various players including Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich. Kimmich, touted to be the future captain of Bayern, might not even have a future at the club now that his position has come into question. Eberl gave a cryptic answer when asked about Kimmich

Eberl was asked the following question: “What is Kimmich’s situation? In his ZDF documentary he spoke about the loss of trust in FC Bayern. After what he said, can he still have a future at the club?”

His response: “Of course. When he said those statements around two years ago, he wasn’t having an easy time, in relation to the Corona debate and later the discussions about the #6 and the right-back position. He still has a year left on his contract. We agreed that we would talk to each other after his vacation. Joshua is a very good player, but it is generally true that professional football is a competitive sport – we cannot say to a player per se: Hey, you are the one who is guaranteed to start.”

Is Eberl trying to say that Kimmich’s future at the club is up for discussion? One wonders what will happen to the veteran player — Kimmich’s talents are such that if he is up for sale, many clubs will come after him. So, if Kimmich appears in a Man City shirt under his former boss Pep Guardiola in the 2024/25 season, not many Bayern fans will be surprised.
