‘I don’t get it’ – West Ham United slammed over transfer decision

Frank McAvennie has slammed West Ham United over the decision to sell Flynn Downes to Southampton this summer.

The Saints confirmed [16 July] the signing of Downes on a four-year deal, having impressed during a season-long loan at St Mary’s Stadium last term.

Southampton are reported to be paying around £18million for the deal [Daily Echo, 15 July].

Having joined the Hammers on a £12m deal from Swansea City in 2022, as per Sky Sports, the 25-year-old hit the ground running but was surprisingly forced out on loan last summer.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie – who believes the Irons could end up paying £50million in the future to buy him back – said: “I don’t get it. I think he’s a great player, and he could become even better.

“His family are West Ham through and through so I’m hoping he goes to Southampton, has a great season, and proves everyone wrong.

“But on the other hand, I don’t want him to because… Are we going to buy him back for £50million? I think he’s one we could have let go for another year on loan and brought back. That’s what I would’ve liked to see.

“At least they’re getting a bit of money in, though they’re not spending it. I thought he was a good player but he never got a chance under David Moyes. So, fair play and good luck to him.”

West Ham United to regret Flynn Downes summer exit

Despite a good start to life at the London Stadium, arriving as a boyhood fan in 2022, Downes’ future looked uncertain after being sent out on loan by Moyes last summer.

The midfielder took the opportunity in his stride, becoming one of the key figures of Russell Martin’s Southampton side as they won promotion back to the Premier League.

He played 37 matches in all competitions, earning himself a move back to St Mary’s Stadium, with the manager eager to add him to the ranks on a permanent basis.

Like McAvennie, many fans believe the decision will backfire on the club at some point, with Downes’ development only set to improve each year. This may be one the club live to regret.
