JUST IN: The Sheffield Wednesday manager admits a striker prior to the match against Leicester City.

When Sheffield Wednesday plays Leicester City in the middle of the week, striker Michael Smith might not be available.

Smith is currently Wednesday’s top scorer in the Championship and the only Owl to have scored more than once in the division since moving up from League One, so the bar may not be very high this season. Thus far, he has three to his credit.

The attacker was expected to recover over the international break after sustaining a knock during the build-up to Wednesday’s match, but he was unable to play against Millwall. Trying to make it back in time for the trip to Birmingham City this past weekend was the plan.

But it was not to be, as the 32-year-old was once again left off of Danny Röhl’s squad for the match at St. Andrews. The young Bailey Cadamarteri, who had made his Championship debut earlier in the month, was once again benched. Wednesday was attempting to equalize when he entered the game as a late substitute.

Since Josh Windass was suspended, Cadamarteri might have another opportunity on Wednesday night, assuming ‘Smudga’ is still out of the picture. Michael Smith wasn’t quite prepared to play, according to Röhl’s Saturday explanation. And all we can do is keep an eye on him day by day. This is the method; it’s possible that he’s not available against Leicester as well. We’re just observing this injury day by day.

In their final game of the month, Wednesday returns to Hillsborough to play the Foxes at 7:45 p.m. They are heavy underdogs against a Leicester team that is riding high at the top of the table.
