This season, the 28-year-old has made only one start, and there have been rumors that he may leave the Etihad in January.

Although the Spaniard acknowledged that he “visualized” the team’s style of play and “struggles” to understand Phillips’ involvement, he did commend the England international’s desire and application.

Regarding Phillips’ future, Guardiola said, “I’m not sure.” I regret all I did to him. I sincerely apologize for the minutes I failed to provide him.

“It’s just because I visualise something, where I struggle to see him in the team. I am so sorry. I will not say that, because I have to be ruthless.

“I wouldn’t care if someone made a big deal out of it. I am concerned about him because of the manner he acted around his teammates.”

Additionally, Guardiola gave an update on Kevin De Bruyne’s recuperation from a hamstring injury sustained on the first day of the Premier League season against Burnley.

The Belgian has returned to the turf, but he hasn’t yet trained with his teammates from the first squad.

Although De Bruyne’s manager stated that he might not be fit to participate in time for the Club World Cup, the player was nonetheless named in City’s squad for the event later this month.

“[He has] started to run on the pitch but hasn’t trained with us once,” Guardiola remarked. I don’t know if the [Club World Cup] will happen a little early.

“We don’t rush Kevin, and we’ll be here to greet him with open arms when he returns. He will be back when he is. We fought top teams like Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, and Villa, but not too long ago, we were at the top.”
