Pascal Jansen and Liam Rosenior have dropped out: 3 more managers Sunderland should consider

Sunderland have been managerless since February when they decided to part ways with Michael Beale, and frustrations are growing on Wearside.
Sunderland placed Mike Dodds in charge until the end of the season, with many hoping that move with give the Black Cats ample time to identify and top contender and bring them in.

However, over 110 days has now passed, and the head coach’s role on Wearside remains vacant.

Long-term target Will Still has joined RC Lens, while Pascal Jansen and Liam Rosenior have dropped out of the running after links grew stronger and stronger.

The Black Cats are sald to have some unnamed candidates in mind as they look to make an appointment soon. Here, we put forward three more contenders Sunderland should consider as options drop like flies…

Ronny Deila

Norwegian boss Deila is out of work after departing Club Brugge in March and while he’s spent much of his managerial career in top-flight football, a club like Sunderland could have a chance of tempting him to the Championship.

It would be a new challenge for the Celtic boss to try and lead a team to promotion, but his pedigree at a high level could make him an eye-catching appointment for the Black Cats.

A move for Deila would not require compensation and having led teams in European football, he could be a well-backed and ambitious appointment for the club to make after a stressful managerial hunt.

Paul Heckingbottom

Sunderland were linked with Heckingbottom back in March and if the club would prefer to move for a boss with experience of the Championship and promotions on his record, the ex-Sheffield United man is the pick of those available.

His time in the top-flight with the Blades was tough, but that should not discount the fantastic work he did at Bramall Lane to get them up from the second-tier.

As another manager currently without a club, he could be one worth keeping in mind to lead the new era at the Stadium of Light.

Eirik Horneland

Last but not least is a slightly different one as 49-year-old Eirik Horneland is currently in work. He’s in charge of Brann in his native and could be a really bold appointment by Sunderland.

Horneland has caught the eye with his work in the Eliteserien, in which he won the league and cup double in 2022. They’ve also embarked on European football under his lead, all while playing attractive attacking football.

Compensation would be needed and it might not be particularly cheap given his contract runs until 2027. However, Sunderland will benefit massively from an impressive appointment after this saga, and Horneland would be just that.
