Celtic celebrations sees 19 arrested and four cops injured amid street carnage

Around 25,000 Hoops fans descended on the Glasgow Cross area on Saturday afternoon to celebrate their side’s third title in a row.

Nineteen people were arrested amid disorder in Glasgow as thousands of Celtic supporters flocked to the city centre on Saturday afternoon to celebrate their side’s third title in a row.

Police Scotland estimate around 25,000 jubilant Hoops fans gathered in the Glasgow Cross area for a street party after their heroes lifted the SPFL Premiership trophy at Parkhead.

Celtic diehards turned the air green with flares and scaled bus stops, traffic lights, and the mercat cross in a bid to get a better vantage point to view the celebrations below.

The street party went on for several hours, with a police presence in place to “maintain public safety and minimise disruption” in the area.

Throughout the day, 19 people were arrested in connection with various offences, while investigations are ongoing into several other incidents. Four officers required medical treatment after being injured during the disorder.

Superintendent John Menzies said: “I would like to thank our partner agencies and the wider public for their support.

“Unfortunately, we experienced some disorder including the use of pyrotechnics and alcohol-related offences. We took robust action to prevent these escalating.

“Violence and assaults on members of the public or police officers is completely unacceptable and we continue to work to identify those responsible.”

Glasgow City Council also hit out at “unacceptable” and “antisocial” behaviour from some fans, with bus stops and traffic lights damaged by those climbing atop them.

A spokesman for the council praised the “exceptional” work overnight to clear the area of the “substantial” debris left by the joyous Hoops supporters, with mounds of litter and broken glass cleared overnight before Sunday’s Cancer Research UK Race For Life.
