Arsenal 3-3 Spurs (4-3 on pens, Conti Cup) | Robert’s verdict: “This game gave us a lot of self-confidence”

Robert Vilahamn was full of praise for the way his players went toe-to-toe with Arsenal in Wednesday night’s Continental Tyres League Cup clash.

Acting as a sort of warm-up to the teams’ massive Women’s Super League match on Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the intense derby saw us win three times thanks to goals from Martha Thomas and a brace from Jessica Naz. However, the Gunners answered back each time, forcing a 3-3 draw.

As a result of the tie going to penalties for an additional point in Group D—which Arsenal won 4-3—Robert observed a number of encouraging signs as we continue to prepare for Saturday’s encounter in N17.

“We created some really nice chances and scored three beautiful goals. We played some really good football, attacking football, and we dared to play out from the back and through their press,” he remarked. “It was a really wonderful game for us because we showed the fans that we can play some really good football and we rebounded back from the two previous results (losses to Manchester United and City in the WSL).

“I think it was a good way to bounce back and make sure we have good energy for Saturday. This game gave us a lot of self-confidence that we’re back.” We can play out, score goals, defend, and block shots. It will be the largest game I have ever coached, and I am excited to be at that stadium and want to see a large turnout. Saturday is going to be incredible, and I sincerely hope that everyone can come out and cheer on these players because they truly are incredible.”

Robert commended Martha and Jess for their efforts on Wednesday night, saying they played clinically in front of goal for us.

“If you look at Martha playing as a 10 now, you can see that she’s finding the pockets, playing through balls, scoring goals, and being in the box. She’s adapting so well, and it’s a pleasure to work with her,” the man remarked.

While Jess Naz hasn’t been playing a lot, she is always moving upward. It’s good to see her progress since today she performed like a nine, showing off her world-class finishing and threat in behind.
