Morgan Gibbs-White reacts after Matheus Cunha celebration for Wolves in draw v Forest

Morgan Gibbs-White gave his thoughts about Matheus Cunha after Nottingham Forest 2-2 Wolves, after seeing the star celebrate the same way he did.

Wanderers picked up a point on the road, against a Nuno Espirito Santo side scrapping for their Premier League lives.

Cunha opened the scoring with a world-class goal, running the length of the field before turning inside two defenders and scoring into the top corner.

Gibbs-White, always the villain when these two sides meet, then scored with a header. He then proceeded to provoke the travelling fans, putting his fingers in his ears. That was something we also saw last season, after he scored his penalty in the shootout in the Carabao Cup game.

After scoring his second goal later in the game, Cunha then mimicked that celebration, again just as he did last season after he scored his own penalty in the shootout against Forest.

After the game, the pair spoke about their antics…

Morgan Gibbs-White reacts after seeing Matheus Cunha mimick his celebration during Nottingham Forest v Wolves

Gibbs-White and the Wolves fans have a pretty spikey relationship these days.

Some feel he has not conducted himself in the best way since leaving the club, and has shown disrespectful behaviour at times.

The attacking midfielder was sold in the summer of 2022, after Forest came in with a bid that was ultimately too big to turn down.

There’s a real disdain now for the player for some, but there does not appear to be too much animosity between Gibbs-White and the Wolves players.

Speaking after yesterday’s game about Cunha, he said (via Match of the Day): “He’s a friend of mine. He’s a good guy, a really good guy. Football is entertainment, and we showed that today, but as a team we are very frustrated.”

Cunha said (via Wolves official): “But the second (celebration) was a little bit of a joke with Morgan Gibbs-White. He’s a great player and I know things have been said before the game about when we played each other in the Carabao Cup last year, so after he scored, I scored and I remembered this celebration, but there was nothing else more than this. It was just a little joke between us.”

Good to see from Cunha

The Gibbs-White situation is a strange one. Wolves were ready to turn to him in the 2022/23 season, with Bruno Lage starting him in the first two Premier League games.

But Forest then came in with their offer and Wanderers decided to cash in, which was understandable.

Since he left, he has provoked fans with his behaviour in games with Wolves. He will perhaps turn around and say that his antics are as a result of the stick he gets.

Whatever the reason for the soured relationship, he will likely be booed every time he comes back to Molineux now.

But his status as a pantomime villain just gives games with Forest more meaning. And it’s good to see Cunha giving a bit back.
