JUST IN: Alex Crook on what Forest owner Marinakis has done that’s risky

TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook believes that Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has just taken a big risk. The talk turned to the fortunes of the Reds earlier this morning on the breakfast show.

Forest are currently inside the relegation zone in the Premier League. This is after the Reds were deducted four points after breaching financial fair play regulations and are now 18th.

That decision came last Monday and Forest owner Marinakis had one week to decide whether or not to appeal. Yesterday, it was announced – by Crook – that the Reds would be starting an appeal process.

Forest now have until the middle of April to submit their grounds for appeal. However, the uncertainty reigns over when an outcome will actually be announced and it could come after the season finishes.

Crook has delivered his verdict on the whole situation. It’s fair to say that he’s not overly convinced that this is such a great idea from a Forest perspective.

We delivered an update from Crook earlier today that basically implied that the Reds were confident an appeal would be successful. Now, however, he believes Forest owner Marinakis is rolling the dice somewhat.

Earlier this morning, the talk on the TalkSPORT Breakfast Show turned towards Forest and their decision to appeal. Crook has given his opinion on the situation and thinks the Reds might regret it.

This morning: “Given the sheer number of players they’ve signed – even in January, they were active up until the end of the window, it does feel like they might have just stuck two fingers up to the rules and regulations. Did they need to sign Jesse Lingard on a ridiculous deal?

“I’m not sure they’re going to win this appeal. I think four points seems fair when you take into account their mitigation. To say there is potential for the points deduction to be increased if their appeal is frivolous, I think this is a very risky move from Evangelos Marinakis. April 12th is the big date now, that’s when they need to submit their appeal by. When we get an outcome, who knows?”

Nobody knows which way the wind will blow for Forest

This whole situation is bordering on farcical now. It seems as though Forest might be hit with a higher points deduction – although it’s believed that the notion is far-fetched and very unlikely.

Forest chief Marinakis is a man who often gets what he wants though. However, it does feel like he’s rolled the dice a little bit here in deciding to test the water with an appeal.

If the club does get more points deducted and end up going down on the back of it, some serious questions will be asked. Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that but for now, the uncertainty goes on.
