Struggling Premier League player regrets not joining Wolves after he missed out last summer.

Wolves were looking at cut-price deals in the transfer market last summer and there was one player from the Championship who will regret missing out on joining Molineux.

Burdened by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, Wolves were left scratching around the market for cut-price deals last summer, with the club forced into selling two of their best players to raise funds.

Wolves brought in Tommy Doyle on loan, Tom King and Matt Doherty on free transfers while spending money on Matheus Cunha, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Santiago Bueno, Boubacar Traore and Enso Gonzalez.

With limited funds compared to their usual war chest, the Wanderers had to shop for bargains in the transfer market as they eyed up two gems from Coventry City.

Wolves came close to signing goal machine Viktor Gyokeres, who instead joined Sporting Lisbon, while the club also weighed up a move for all-action midfielder Gustavo Hamer.

As no offer was placed on the table for Hamer, the Brazilian joined Sheffield United for £15 million, a fee described by journalist Ryan Taylor as an “absolute bargain”.

Gustavo Hamer surely regrets missing out on Wolves’ move

After Coventry narrowly missed out on promotion last season, Hamer achieved his dream of signing for a Premier League club.

A move to Sheffield United was seen as the next step in his career, although he could find himself back in the Championship next season with United teetering on the verge of relegation.

Under the tutelage of Chris Wilder, the Blades are rock bottom of the top flight, eight points from safety with 10 matches to go.

Barring any miracles playing out in the last stretch of the campaign, United will be relegated back to the second tier, which will surely leave Hamer regretting not holding out for a more lucrative move.

While it’s been a terrible season for the Bramall Lane side, Hamer has been a shining light under difficult circumstances, scoring four and assisting four in all competitions.

This places him joint first in the list of goal contributions at the club alongside James McAtee.

Wolves don’t need Gustavo Hamer now

Compared to the Blades, who are destined to get relegated, Wolves are fighting for Europe.

Hamer may regret missing out on a move to Molineux, but having watched Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina emerge as an incredible partnership, O’Neil doesn’t need him now.

Although he’s a talented player and will have offers from the Premier League or abroad in the summer, he isn’t an improvement on Lemina and Gomes as he averages fewer tackles, interceptions and a lower pass completion than the instrumental Wanderers duo, as per FBref.

Of course, if Hamer is made available in the summer, Wolves may pounce at the opportunity, but he wouldn’t be guaranteed to start in midfield.
